On an extremely chilly morning, 23 brave souls fronted up at Collier Park for the stroke round where all the greens were coming off being cored and sanded (It was also a golden putter round). To make matters worse a strong breeze blew up for most off the round and so the conditions were extremely tough.
It was a close day result wise as everyone dug deep. Trevor finally hit the winning podium with a 35 net score the turning point a wonderful birdie on the 16th with a putt from off the green. Well done Trevor. 6 players were in a tie for second but Jonathon (Darcy) Scafidi came second on the countback, with a great back 9 including 4 pars. Peter Musca came 3rd on a countback having 5 pars and 1 birdie for his round. Peter Tallon back to his best NAGA form shooting 25 over his handicap.
We had the Match play Final today between Michael Cragg and Mark Davies. Davies had to give Craggy 2 shots for the day. And what a cracking final it was. Craggy started very nervous and before he could blink was down 3 after 5. Davies was keeping his low-ball flight and playing solidly. Craggy was all over the place. At the turn it was Davies 2 up and with Craggy finally stopping the bleeding and showing glimpses. Then Craggy exploded and the form shown Yanchep was on full display. Davies was cracking under pressure and when Craggy drop a 30m putt on the 14th for birdie he was 2 up. The 15th was all square, with Davies showing some real character to square the hole. With the finish line beckoning Craggy started to tense up and his wild shots return for 2 holes. Davies dug deep and won the next 2 holes. All square into the final hole. Both hit cracking drives and were 140m out side by side. Craggy first, thin his pitch and flew to the back of the green. Davies hit a magnificent pitch just short of the green. Craggy now needed some magic off the green but thinned it again and the match was all over. Truly wonderful contest played in great spirits. Well done gentleman to get to the final. Bad luck to Craggy and congrats to Davies with some of the best clutch golf in the final few holes I’ve seen. You got some heart man.
Today was also the final of the Medal of Medals with 5 of the 8 winners playing. After the first 9 Basil was handling the conditions the best was and was 1 shot ahead of the pirate, Tallon blew up early in the round and Ryan and Oggy were struggling with the wind and greens. Basil then went on in the back 9 and played a very solid round just 1 over his handicap and went on to win by 2 from Ryan and claim his second Medal of Medals titles. His putting was sensation with only 2, 3 putts and countless up and downs in 2. Driving was solid and his new-found cutie pitch delivering the goods.
